In India, where the rock art has now come to be recognized as an independent subject in Art, Archaeology and Ethnography, the painting activity generally starts from Upper Palaeolithic (the evidence of cupules pushes back the beginning of art to Middle and Lower Palaeolithic period) and continues till the Early Historic period. This activity had the maximum development during the Mesolithic which was a phase of faunal turnover, with direct evidence of domestication, disappearance of archaic fauna and its replacement by more advanced forms, some of which continue even till today. There was a clear cut morphological and ecological change during this phase when the rock art is supposed to have proliferated.
