Re emerging Diseases in India
Why are they important?
Re-emerging infections contribute substantially to morbidity and mortality from infectious causes. While tuberculosis, malaria and HIV/AIDS continue to dominate the disease incidence rates, we in India in addition have re-emerging infectious diseases such as kalaazar, dengue, leptospirosis, chikungunya and multi drug resistant tuberculosis.
Disconcertingly, these diseases adversely impact families, workforce productivity and impede economic development.
They also present a formidable challenge on already resource limited health systems, and call for an approach based on prevention and health promotion.
