The photo-reduction of ferric chloride in presence of aqueous acetone and anhydrous ether is a unimolecular reaction.
The temperature and the frequency of the exciting radiations have a marked effect on the velocity constant of the reaction.
The rate of reaction is directly proportional to the intensity of the incident light.
The quantum yield of the reaction increases with dilution of ferric chloride, the temperature and the frequency of the exciting radiations and is of the order of 0·5 for acetone and 1·0 for ether.
