Statistical evaluation of the performance of concrete waste aggregates for utilization in roads

In developing nations, use of concrete in the construction of roads is increasing significantly. Consequently, owing to continuous repair and refurbishment of the existing concrete-roads, the amount of generation of concrete-associated waste is also increasing exponentially, in India. Further, several studies have identified the potential of the concrete waste aggregates (CWAs) to be reused in the construction of buildings, however, limited success is reported in their applicability in the construction of roads. In this way, the CWAs are still being dumped in the landfills, water bodies or collected on the road-sides. Therefore, in this study, efforts were made to access the applicability of the CWAs, in construction of wearing course (WC) of the roads, after pre-treating them with bitumen emulsion. Two multivariate approaches i.e., central composite design (CCD) and box-behnken design (BBD) were adopted to design the laboratory experiments, prepare the specimens and to perform the optimization. These approaches were used to estimate the impacts of the three process parametersi.e., dosage of pre-treated CWAs, dosage of bitumen binder (VG30) and temperature on various properties of the designed specimens, viz., volumetric characteristics, water resistance and stiffness. This investigation revealedthat at optimum conditions i.e., pre-treated CWAs = 21.02%; bitumen (VG30) = 4.79%; temperature = 9.9°C, values of all the response parameters were sustained and within the limits required for the construction of the WC. Hence, the findings of this study showed that the CWAs, after being treated with bitumen, can be reused in the construction of roads. Further, this study may also encourage the construction engineers, researchers and regional authorities, to work towards framing the standards and litigations for enhancing the reusability of the CWAs.
