Influence of short-pulsed laser and its thermal effect on micromachining of NiTi alloy
GEORGE EBENEZER M ADAM KHAN J T WINOWLIN JAPPES
The importance of nickel-titanium alloys increases drastically in bio-medical engineering. It involves micromachining and micro-perforation over the surface for many bio tribological applications. This research attempts to study the machinability of nickel-titanium alloy using a short-pulsed laser cutting process. This investigation focuses on a micro-level circular and square hole at a dimension of 500 μm. Electron images’ deviation in micromachining was observed, highlighting their significance in this discussion. The effect of shortpulse laser over long pulse laser machining has been compared with microscopic results. The apparent damage observed due to the impact of long-pulsed laser proves the advantage of short-pulsed laser machining. Themechanism involved in short-pulsed laser machining has ablation in shears over grain regimes. The effect of heat energy generated with the laser process has been completely eradicated in the short-pulse laser cutting process. Hence, this study confirms that the short-pulse laser has the best surface quality and is accurate micromachining.
