This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics has been jointly awarded to Syukuro Manabe from Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, USA and Klaus Hasselman from Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Hamburg, Germany and Giorgio Parisi from the Sapienza University of Rome, Rome, Italy. One-half of the prize has been awarded jointly to Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselman “for the physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming.” The other half went to Giorgio Parisi ``for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.” This article will discuss some of the most influential works of Giorgio Parisi on disordered systems, along with his work on climate change that might have played an important role in developing a good physical model of Earth’s climate. The article will also touch upon the important contributions of Parisi to other fields without much details to highlight his scientific versatility.
