    • The odd-even shifts in odd-odd deformed nuclei based on residual interaction studies

      Residual interaction calculations have been made for predicting the sign and the magnitude of the odd-even shifts observed in the rotational levels of theK=0 bands in the doubly-odd rare earth nuclei. It is shown that, contrary to the conclusions reached in earlier studies, the same zero-range spin-dependent residual interaction can reproduce the odd-even shifts as well as the GM splitting energies. This has been made possible with the inclusion of the phase factors for the total intrinsic spin and the total parity of the two-quasi-particle states in the Newby matrix elements. Predictions are made for the odd-even shifts for otherK=0 bands arising from several configurations not confirmed or observed so far.

      Configuration assignments are derived for the observed energy levels in the odd-odd deformed nucleus170Lu99 based on the calculations of the two-particle band head energies for a zero range residual interaction, the beta-feeding characteristics, and the observed features for similar bands in the neighbouring nuclei. In particular, specific assignments are given for theJπ=1+ levels at 198.4 keV, 349.0 keV and 785.5 keV. The ambiguities with respect to the assignments for theKπ=3 bands are discussed. A new isomer withJπ=7+ and half-life of several seconds is predicted around (225±25) keV and experiments are suggested to identify it.

      Consideration of the expected two-quasiparticle structures and their estimated band head energies, and the selection rules for beta transition rates for the154Nd →154Pm →154Sm decays are used to deduce the configurations for the isomers and the low-spin structures in the neutron rich doubly odd nucleus61154Pm93. The 2.68 m high spin isomer and the 1.73 m low spin isomer are respectively assigned the spin-parity 4+ and 1+ with the configuration {p:5/2 [532↑] +n:3/2 [521↑]} with the 2.68 m isomer lying lower in energy, and thus forming the154Pm ground state. Two-quasiparticle character of the beta-connected states in154Nd decay and154Pm decay is discussed.

    • Beta decay of 125Sb and level structures in 125Te

      The decay of 2.76y 125Sb to levels of 125Te has been studied using an HPGe detector for gamma-ray and a mini orange electron spectrometer for conversion electron measurements. We identify 38 transitions in this decay, including 13 gamma rays and 4 conversion electron lines being reported for the first time. New results also include E1 multipolarity assignments to 3 newly observed transitions and M-shell conversion coefficient for the 109 keV M4 transition. A revised 125Te level scheme is constructed using Ritz combination principle. While confirming the existence of 10 well established levels below 700 keV excitation, we introduce 3 other levels at 402.0, 538.6 and 652.9 keV. Interpretation of the observed levels in terms of various theoretical approaches is briefly discussed. The newly introduced 538.6 keV (1/2+) and 652.9 keV (3/2+) levels are seen as the two missing members of the (s1/2 ⊗ 2+) and (d3/2 ⊗ 2+) sextuplet in the quasiparticle-phonon coupling scheme.
