Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II) form 1:2 complexes while Fe(III) forms 1:3 complex with δ(3-carboxy, 4-hydroxy benzoyl) pentanoic acid. Their structures have been proposed on the basis of analytical, spectral, thermal and magnetic measurements. The infrared spectra provide an evidence for the replacement of the aromatic carboxylic group hydrogen but not the phenolic group hydrogen.

Square planar mixed ligand complexes of the type [CuLL′] where L = 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde and L′ = acetoacetanilide, have been synthesized on treatment with ammonia. Amine exchange of the above Schiff base complexes has been carried out on treatment with different amines. The reaction with ethanol amine is quite interesting compared to other amines. It reacts with 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde to form a Schiff base, while the β-diketone part is removed in the complex formation. All the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, spectral studies, magnetic measurement, TLC, and conductane.

Poly(1,3[2-methoxy-4-hydroxy-5-acetylphenylene]butylene) was prepared by Friedel-Craft polycondensation of 2-hydroxy, 4-methoxyacetophenone and 1,4-butane-diol in presence of poiyphosphoric acid catalyst. The polymer samples were characterized by IR spectra, TGA and their Mn determined by nonaqueous titration. Viscosity measurents in DMSO showed that solutions exhibited normal behaviour.
Polymers were complexed with Cu(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) and characterized. Chelation and ion exchange properties were also studied by employing the batch equilibrium method.
