Sorption properties of hydrous thorium oxide depend very much on the preparatory conditions. The sorption of alkali metal ions from alkaline solutions gives rise to a sequence: Li+>Na+>K+>Cs+>NH4+ and that for transition metal ion: Cu2+>Co2+>Ni3+. A sequence for the sorption capacities for the anions: CrO42−>Cl−>NO3−Br−>CNS− has also been established. Results indicate that hydrous thorium oxide is both a weakly acidic and weakly basic amphoteric exchanger.

Performance of hydrous ZrO2, ThO2 and magnetite in a column upto 90°C has been evaluated with reference to the sorption of Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe3+ and Co2+ on them. The general trend in sorption was found to be Cr3+>Fe3+>Mn2+>Co2+. The sorption of individual ions on these oxides from a mixture of the four ions was also studied at 90°C, by varying different parameters like the amount of sorbent, concentration of the ions, flow rates and pH of the medium. The results indicate that the rate of sorption is rather low. All the oxides showed good sorption in alkaline media. Hydrous ZrO2 exhibits, in general, better sorption characteristic as compared to hydrous ThO2 and magnetite.
