This review deals with the development of a series of reagents and reactions for organic synthesis using simple starting materials. A wide array of carbocationic and onium ion reagents, halogenating agents, Friedel-Crafts catalysts, metal-induced oxidationreductions and silicon reagents were utilized in basic (unit) reactions, which serve as building blocks for general synthetic transformations.
