1-Benzamido-2-methyl-3-carbethoxy-5-hydroxyindole and 1-benzamido-2-methyl-3-carbethoxy-5-hydroxybenz[g]indole were synthesized by adopting the Nenitzescu reaction. These new 5-hydroxyindoles were reacted with methyl iodide to obtain O- and N-methylated products. All the newly synthesized compounds were characterized by their IR, NMR and mass spectra and were also screened for their antimicrobial activity.
