The effects of exposing seawater adapted cichlid fish, tilapia
(Sarotherodon mossambicus Peters) to sublethal concentrations of toluene on the activities of lactate dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase and acetylcholinesterase were studied. The activity of lactate dehydrogenase increased while those of succinate dehydrogenase and acetylcholinesterase were inhibited in most tissues of the exposed fish. The alterations in the dehydrogenases suggested that some changes in carbohydrate metabolism may have occurred. Acetylcholinesterase inhibition in brain and other tissues indicated impairment of nervous function in toluene-intoxicated tilapia.

To trigger further research on plant mitochondria, the Journal of Biosciences is bringing out a special issue titled "Plant Mitochondria: Properties and Interactions with Other Organelles".
Plant mitochondria are quite distinct and have unique features, such as a cyanide-insensitive alternate pathway. They also interact with chloroplasts to optimize photosynthetic carbon assimilation.
Submissions are welcome until 30 July 2023. The contributions can be original articles, short communications, reviews, or mini-reviews on any topic related to plant mitochondria.
