      Spinel Li$_2$Co$_{1–x}$Cu$_x$Ti$_3$O$_8$ nanopowders (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5 molar ratios) were synthesized via a sol–gel auto-combustion scheme. The preparation conditions like annealing temperature, Cu$^{2+}$ ion substituted on the crystallinity, microstructure and chemical composition were inspected using X-ray diffraction, X-rays photoelectron spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of the Li$_2$Co$_{0.75}$Cu$_{0.25}$Ti$_3$O$_8$electrode towards the Li-ion battery was inspected via potentiodynamic cyclic voltammetry experiment, galvanostatic charge/discharge tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Li$_2$Co$_{0.75}$Cu$_{0.25}$Ti$_3$O$_8$ electrode exhibited a good reversible charge–discharge capacity with a primary discharge capacity of 527 mAh g$^{-1}$ and excellent cycling stability of 98.75% coulombic efficiency.
