    • Hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanoflowers and their photocatalyst application

      ZnO nanoflowers were prepared by the hydrothermal method and studied by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and photoluminescence. ZnO nanoflowers with star-like morphology were of pure wurtzite phase. The edges of the petals were composed of assemblies of smaller nanocrystallites. Green and orange emissions in photoluminescence were attributed to O vacancies and O interstitials, respectively. Furthermore, ZnO nanoflowers demonstrated the effective photocatalytic activities, and O vacancies and O interstitials were considered to be the active sites of the ZnO photocatalyst.

      CeO$_2$ nanomaterialswere synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method, and their photocatalytic and hydrophobic propertieswere systematically investigated. CeO$_2$ nanomaterials displayed excellent photocatalytic properties, and under UV light irradiation, 98.5% Rhodamine B was degenerated by CeO$_2$ nanomaterials grown on Ni foam. After chemical modificationwith 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyl-triethoxysilane (PFDTES), CeO$_2$ nanomaterials showed good hydrophobic properties and water contact angles were in the range of 124−135$^{\circ}$. The hydrophobic property of the CeO$_2$ nanomaterials contributed to the self-assembled membrane also with hydrophobic properties on the surface of the treated CeO$_2$ nanomaterialswith PFDTES. Therefore, the study not only presents a facile method to fabricate CeO$_2$ nanomaterials, but also demonstrates the promising applications of CeO$_2$ in the treatment of waste water and self-cleaning of building materials.
