    • Effect of thuricide on rice stem borers

      The effect of thuricide, a commercial preparation ofBacillus thuringiensis Berliner var.Kurstaki was studied on different stages of rice stem borersScirpophaga incertulas, Sesamia inferens andChilo auricilius. It was found to be ineffective on the eggs,pupae and adults of these borers. All the agegroups of the larval stages got infected. Thuricide was almost equally effectiveat 1·0, 0·75, O·50and 0·25%concentrations. 1% concentration, sprayed at the time of hatching of the larvae, reduced the incidence of dead hearts by 76·36%, white heads by 67·45% and the number of living larvae inside the tillers by 76·87%. It persisted for 15 days or more under green house conditions.

      The chemical analysis of the abdominal scent glands ofChrysocoris purpureus Westw, showed the presence oftrans hex-2-enal, n-dodecane,trans hex-2-enyl butyrate and n-octyl acetate. The scent components are metabolically synthesized within the cells of exocrine glands of bugs and are used as defensive in nature. They do not show any correlation with the secondary metabolites of the host plant.

      The results of static and acute bioassay studies onDaphnia lumholtzi (Cladocera) andCypris subglobosa (Ostracoda) to the varying dosages of Cu, Cd and Zn were presented. The 96 h, LC50 values forDaphnia were found to be 0·009, 0·083, 0·437 and forCypris 0·25, 0·687, 8·3 mgl−1 for Cu, Cd and Zn respectively. This indicates thatDaphnia is very sensitive whileCypris has a good amount of resistance. The rank order for toxicity of 3 metals is Cu>Cd>Zn. The study indicates that the waters getting polluted by heavy metals even at low concentration would remove the population of fish-food organisms without directly effecting fish fauna, thus making water body unfit for fishery use.
