      The blood parameters like haemoglobin level, hematocrit value and erythrocyte count were estimated in the three air-breathing fishes,Anabas scandens (Cuvier),Ophiocephalus gachua (Hamilton-Buchanan) andMystus vittatus (Bloch).A. scandens possesses a higher haemoglobin level than the other two. Hematocrit values also follow the same trend. Maximum erythrocyte count is also obtained forA. scandens. The higher values of haemoglobin content, hematocrit and erythrocyte counts inA. scandens andO. gachua are suggested to serve as rich oxygen stores simulating diving syndromes among higher vertebrates, besides reflecting an adaptation to the mixed condition of systemic arterial blood.

      Proportions and rates of excretion of ammonia and urea and their levels in blood and liver were determined in two obligate (Anabas scandens andChanna gachua) and one facultative (Mystus vittatus) air-breathing teleosts.A. Scandens andC. Gachua, when exposed to air and returned to water, showed marked increase in the proportions of excretion of ammonia N and urea N, the increase in the rate of excretion of urea N being much greater. Significantly high urea N levels in blood and liver were noticed in both species following emersion. Extra synthesis of urea and marked shift towards ureotelism seem probable in exposedA. Scandens andC. Gachua. No such adaptive shift was observed inM. Vittatus. Ability to survive for longer periods out of water byA scandens andC. Gachua may be attributed to this adaptive shift besides other physiological adaptations.

      Total oxygen consumption, glycogen content and succinic dehydrogenase levels in liver, muscle and heart in normal and thiodon-exposed (to sub-lethal concentration for 48 h and to lethal concentration for 6 h)Sarotherodon mossambicus (Peters) were studied. While oxygen consumption of the fish dropped to 43 and 35% respectively under sub-lethal and lethal exposures, the magnitude of decrease in tissue glycogen content as well as tissue succinic dehydrogenase level followed a uniform order of liver > muscle > heart in both the exposures. Reduction in oxygen uptake and tissue glycogen levels were indicative of the onset of hypoxia involving utilization of stored glycogen by the fish under thiodon exposure. The inhibition of succinic dehydrogenase levels in the 3 tissues of thiodon-exposedSarotherodon mossambicus, while indicating the impairment of aerobic metabolism, is also suggestive of a shift from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism in the fish under pollution stress.
