The Journal of Biosciences began in 1934 as a part of the Proceedings of the Indian Academy of Sciences – Section B . In 1978, it separated from the Proceedings – Section B and came to be called the Proceedings – Animal Sciences, Proceedings – Plant Sciences and Proceedings – Experimental Biology. The following year, Proceedings – Experimental Biology was named Journal of Biosciences. In 1991, Animal Sciences and Plant Sciences merged with Experimental Biology to comprise one journal and retained the name Journal of Biosciences.
The Journal of Biosciences (JB) covers all areas of biology and publishes research in the form of articles and short communications, and opinions as reviews, perspectives and commentaries. For details on article categories, please see the Instructions to Authors.
JB publishes research that has broad implications and of general interest with a focus on underlying mechanisms.
JB showcases original research at the frontiers of biology, with a special focus on whole organismal biology and interdisciplinary research that includes the physics, chemistry and engineering aspects of life sciences. JB welcomes reviews and perspectives on emerging areas in biology and on those that have been neglected and need re-visiting. JB also welcomes articles that relate to the ecology and evolution of cellular, organismal and community processes within and across all the kingdoms of life, as well as articles or reviews on the history and philosophy of science.
JB publishes special focus issues. A listing of the recent thematic issues can be found at https://www.ias.ac.in/Journals/Journal_of_Biosciences/Special_Issues. Article series are those written by the same set of authors covering multiple aspects of a subject and appear with regularity while the series is on-going.
JB avoids strictly therapeutic patient-centric research which is better suited for medical journals.
Journal of Biosciences is now distributed in print outside India and online worldwide by Springer, co-publisher of the journal together with the Indian Academy of Sciences.
