Based on the theory of Robinsonet al. regarding the biogenesis of anthocyanins and on a detailed consideration of the occurrence of anthoxanthins (flavones and flavonols) in plants, a scheme of evolution of the various types of anthoxanthins is developed and discussed. Besides the existence of stages of oxidation and reduction of the side phenyl nucleus, similar modifications by oxidation and reduction of the benzopyrone part is involved. The possibility of a variation in ring (C) of the common precursor (I) as shown in structure (VII) leading to certain rare cases having hydroxyl groups in 2′- and 2′∶;4′-positions is suggested.
