    • Abstract

       

      5,5′-methylenedisalicylhydroxamic acid (Medsha) has been prepared by the reaction of diethyl-5,5′-methylenedisalicylate and hydroxylamine. The solubility, spectral and thermal characteristics, pK values, and reactions with metal ions are reported. AlthoughMedsha itself gives precipitates with many metal ions, selectivity can be increased by appropriate control of pH and the use of masking agents, so that it can be used as a reagent for fewer cations.
