Solar energy and solid state chemistry
The transition from reliance on fossil fuels to long-term energy sources is a most urgent technical challenge to modern civilization. This paper outlines some materials problems associated with the transition to solar energy as a distributed source of (a) low-temperature heat for hot water, domestic heating, and refrigeration/air-conditioning, (b) electric power, and (c) fuel.
