Here, we have synthesized d and f metal ions, i.e., iron (III) and europium (III) chloride hexahydrate-based dicarboxylic metal-organic framework (MOF) with common organic linker benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid, using solvothermal method under certain experimental conditions. The synthesis and structural validation of dicarboxylic MOFs have been confirmed using Powder X-ray diffraction techniques, scanning electron microscopy, infrared and absorption spectroscopy. In line of the comparative study on d and f metal ions based dicarboxylic MOFs, luminescent features has been confirmed in different solvents using photoluminescence spectroscopy. Importantly, optical sensing of pollutant using Eu-MOF and Fe-MOF has been demonstrated in chloroform. Notably, the luminescence quenching mechanism has been recognized towards energy competition between Eu-MOF and analyte. The observed f–f transitions effective support makes ideal detection of selected pollutant, i.e., nitrobenzene using Eu-MOF over Fe-MOF. Finally, $R^2$ = 0.9379 with limit of detection of 0.100 ppm was noted using Eu-MOF for pollutant detection.
