    • Abstract

To enhance the tribological performance of the self-lubricating coating, graphite self-lubricating coatings were deposited on middle carbon steel using electrospark deposition (ESD). The microstructure and components have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy images and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. Tribological experiments were carried out on a reciprocating type pin-on-disc tribometer at 5–20 N loads and 200–500 t min$^{–1}$ reciprocating frequency. Results indicated that there was a transition layer between coating and substrate, which should have a thin harder layer at a certain position and can increase the tribological properties of the coating. The graphite coating had better anti-friction and anti-wear performance than uncoated middle carbon steel. The worn surfaces showed that the wear mechanism was changed for graphite coating compared with uncoated middle carbon steel. The wear mechanism of the graphite coating changed from the single abrasive wear to the coexistence of abrasive wear andadhesive wear when reciprocating frequency and load from low to high.
