Processing of materials in space
This paper reviews briefly many aspects concerning the processing of materials in space. Under micro-gravity conditions many phenomena like convection, liquid flow, etc., are profoundly affected and surface tension forces may take over in some of the heat transfer processes. There are many advantages in studying the various materials processing techniques like electrophoresis, crystal growth, liquid phase miscibility gap and in preparing eutectic alloys, magnetic materials and composites under space conditions. Some of the recent results of such space experiments are presented. The physics of the molecular shield used for reducing the pressures at altitudes of 200 or 300 km by 5 orders of magnitude is discussed. The article concludes with a description of the space shuttle facility and some possible experiments that may be done on it.
