The Indian Academy of Sciences and Springer mutually agreed to co-publish the Academy’s ten journals and executed an agreement in the year 2006.
To enhance the scope of its activities, the Academy formed the Academy Trust (tAcT), a non-profit charitable Trust, under its auspices. The objective of tAcT includes the institution of endowment Chairs, allowing internationally successful researchers to interact with the Indian academic community.
Springer Nature, is a major force in scientific, scholarly, professional and educational publishing. Driven by its global core values and ideals, Springer innovates, adapts and promotes real, beneficial change in publishing. Springer itself, and through its Group, endeavours to establish itself as a leading advocate of sustainability research and solutions development via the Grand challenges programme.
The world faces complex global problems that must be addressed to ensure humanity a healthy and sustainable future. To address these grand challenges, scientists, social scientists, engineers and other researchers must collaborate across disciplines to advance solutions that policymakers, business leaders and civil society representatives can implement. Springer Nature is a leading academic publisher that operates globally and across all academic research disciplines, and, therefore, is well positioned to deliver rigorous research to those in a position to take action. In 2017, the Grand Challenges programme was launched to highlight some of the best work published on these topics across the different Springer Nature brands to help develop solutions to these global problems. The Academy–Springer Nature Chair is part of Springer Nature’s Grand Challenges Programme. The Chair Professorship will bring an eminent international scientist working in the area of sustainability to lecture at research-intensive institutions in India and the neighbouring countries, as well as to deliver public lectures to address a wider audience. Prof. Frank Shu is the first Academy – Springer Nature Chair Professor.
