2002 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

The Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for 2002 was jointly awarded to Sydney Brenner, John Sulston and Robert Horvitz (Box 1) for their research contributions in the area of “genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death”. Before discussing their individual contributions, let us take a look at a few aspects of biology that form the background to the discoveries of the three scientists.
