Refresher Course on Physics of the Atmosphere and the Ocean (1-12, December 2003)

A Refresher Course on Physics of the Atmosphere and the Ocean for college/university teachers will be held at the CAS, IISc, Bangalore for a two week period.

Atmospheric and oceanic sciences have evolved into highly quantitative fields of science, that involve complex interactions between different scales of motion leading to weather and climate. The course will start with a description of selected phenomena in the atmosphere and the ocean. It will then give an overview of dynamics and thermodynamics that provide physical understanding and predictive capability of these phenomena. Observing techniques, global observations and threedimensional global models for weather and climate predictions will be discussed. Some recent development in the field will also be highlighted. The participants will also be introduced to web-based teaching resources. The course will consist of about 3 hours of lectures and about 3 hours of practicals on problem solving and demonstrations every day.
