Refresher Course in Experimental Physics

28 October - 10 November 2003

sponsored by Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore

in collaboration with Department of Physics, Goa University

A Refresher Course in Experimental Physics for post-graduate college and university teachers will be held at the Department of Physics, Saurashtra University, Rajkot from 3 November to 16 November 2003.

The aim of this Refresher Course is to motivate physics teachers to improve their experimental skills and develop an insight for designing and setting up of physics experiments in college/ university laboratories.

This TWO WEEKS’ course will consist of lectures and laboratory experiments in selected areas of condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, electronics and space physics. The Course will include project work to design, build and test electronic kits such as temperature controller, constant current source, regulated power supply, etc. useful for a physics laboratory.

Teachers who wish to participate in this Refresher Course should send their brief curriculum vitae (including name, date of birth, email and postal address, educational qualifications, teaching experience, courses taught, positions held; please state whether you are involved with post-graduate teaching – if so, how?) along with a brief write up as to why they would like to participate in this course and their expectations from the course, to the Course coordinator.

Selected teachers will be provided local hospitality and round trip actuals of train fare (I class or III A C).

Refresher Course on Physics of the
Atmosphere and the Ocean
1-12, December 2003

sponsored by Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore

at The Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences,
Indian Insitute of Science, Bangalore

A Refresher Course on Physics of the Atmosphere and the Ocean for college/university teachers will be held at the CAS, IISc, Bangalore for a two week period.

Atmospheric and oceanic sciences have evolved into highly quantitative fields of science, that involve complex interactions between different scales of motion leading to weather and climate. The course will start with a description of selected phenomena in the atmosphere and the ocean. It will then give an overview of dynamics and thermodynamics that provide physical understanding and predictive capability of these phenomena. Observing techniques, global observations and three-dimensional global models for weather and climate predictions will be discussed. Some recent development in the field will also be highlighted. The participants will also be introduced to web-based teaching resources. The course will consist of about 3 hours of lectures and about 3 hours of practicals on problem solving and demonstrations every day.

For teachers who teach atmospheric and oceanic sciences, the course will provide a modern outlook on teaching the subject. For those who teach physics and mathematics, the course will provide an introduction to a new, complex and challenging area with high application potential.

Teachers with background in physical science, atmospheric science or oceanic science may send their application on plain paper with the following details: name, date of birth, postal address, residential address, e-mail, telephone numbers, academic qualifications starting from B.Sc onward, teaching experience, courses taught, positions held and a statement indicating reasons for interest in participating in the course. Teachers applying for participation are also requested to indicate that necessary leave for participation would be available from the parent institute.

Applications may be sent to:
Course Coordinator, Refresher Course on Physics of the Atmosphere and the Ocean
Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences
Indian Institute of Science
Bangalore-560 012
Telephone: (080) 360 0450, Fax: (080) 360 0865,
Email : chairman@caos.iisc.ernet.in

Preference will be given to teachers below 45 years of age. Selected participants will be provided local hospitality and train travel (AC three tier) from the place of duty to Bangalore and back by the shortest route.

Last date for receipt of application : 31 August 2003.
