Physical Research Laboratory

Summer Training Programme  2002

Physical Research Laboratory is a premier research and training institution of India, supported by Department of Space, Government of India, and has a multi-dimensional research programme encompassing astronomy and solar physics, atmospheric sciences and aeronomy, planetary exploration, sub-mm astronomy, theoretical physics, nonlinear dynamics and computational physics, laser physics and quantum optics, earth sciences and solar system studies. It has facilities for ground based as well as satellite, rocket and balloon borne experiments along with those for back end instrumentation development. The Laboratory has recently acquired a supercomputer (IBM RS/6000 SP High node-16 processor machine) which offers scalable high performance parallel computing system for numerically intensive computational tasks, together with RS/6000 44P Model 270-4 processor high-end graphics for visualization of scientific data.

The Laboratory conducts summer training programme for students every year for about 2 months with a view to provide them an opportunity to pursue a research project of their interest in association with the faculty of the Laboratory. The Summer Training Programme for the year 2002 will be during the period May 15-July 12.

Eligibility: Students who are studying in first year MSc in Physics/Geophysics or III year BTech. (Engineering Physics). Limited number of students studying in II & III year BSc/II year BTech. (Engineering Physics & Computer Science) will also be considered for the programme. The total number of trainees will be about 40. A consolidated stipend of Rs. 3500/- per month, second class return railway fare and hostel accommodation (on a nominal charge) are provided to the trainees, in addition to a book grant of Rs. 500/-.

The selection of trainees is done on the basis of the academic record of the applicant and nomination by the Head of the Department of the University/Institution/College. A brief bio-data of the candidate giving name, address (both home address & address for correspondence), academic record and a short write-up of the research interest of the candidate may be forwarded to:
