The Nevanlinna Prize is awarded every four years
by the International Congress of Mathematicians (since 1982), to young
researchers who have made outstanding contributions in mathematical
aspects of information science. The 2002 Nevanlinna Prize has been
awarded to Dr. Madhu Sudan, from the Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science Department, MIT, USA, for his work in the areas of probabilistically
checkable proofs PCPs, non-approximibility of optimization problems,
and error-correcting codes. In this article, we describe these areas
and Madhu Sudans important contributions.
