Biotechnology in the Mining Industry

Preston Devasia and K A Natarajan


Preston Devasia is a senior lecturer at the Vellore Institute of Technology. He teaches and studies microbial biotechnology and diversity.



K A Natarajan is professor and chairman at the Department of Metallurgy, Indian Institute of Science. His areas of research include mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, minerals bioprocessing, corrosion engineering and environmental control.



 


Bacterial leaching is the extraction of metals from their ores using microorganisms. Microbial technology offers an economic alternative for the mining industry, at a time when high-grade mineral resources are being depleted.
