The Special Theory of Relativity

Vasant Natarajan and Diptiman Sen

Vasant Natarajan is at the Department of Physics, IISc, Bangalore. His current research involves trapping of atoms to carry out high precision tests of fundamental physics. He has earlier worked on high precision mass spectrometry and on the focussing of atomic beams by laser fields.

Diptiman Sen works in the Centre for High Energy Physics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He is interested in condensed matter systems in low dimensions and quantum field theory..

The year 2005 has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year of Physics. This has been done to commemorate Albert Einstein's ``miraculous year'' a century ago, during which the young Einstein made a number of remarkable discoveries that changed the course of physics. In that single year, he completed his PhD thesis and published five papers on three different subjects, namely, the photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, and the special
theory of relativity.
