Classroom

In this section of Resonance, we invite readers to pose questions likely to be raised in a classroom situation. We may suggest strategies for dealing with them, or invite responses, or both. “Classroom” is equally a forum for raising broader issues and sharing personal experiences and viewpoints on matters related to teaching and learning science.

Area and Volume of a Spherical Cap – Revisited

S N Maitra

In [1], Makesh Pravin computed the area of a spherical cap in terms of the distance $L$ between its center and its base, using spherical coordinates and double integrals. However the result can be obtained more simply. We show how, below, and derive the
corresponding formula for the volume of such a cap.
