Government of India National Board of Higher Mathematics Department of Higher Mathematics, Department of Atomic Energy OYC Building, CSM Marg, Mumbai 400 001 Scholarships for pursuing post graduate studies (M.A./M.Sc.) in Mathematics National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) invites applications for the grant of scholarships to students pursuing studies for M.A/M.Sc. in Mathematics. Eligibility: Applicants should be motivated students with First Class Bachelor's degree or equivalent grade qualified to pursue M.A./M.Sc. in Mathematics. Students studying in their last semester of B.Sc. with good academic record can also apply. Applicants should be below the age of 22 years as on January 1, 2001. Exceptional cases will, however, be considered on merit. Amount of scholarship: The successful candidates will be eligible for a scholarship of Rs 1,200/- per month during two years of their M.A./M.Sc. course. The selected students would be expected to enrol themselves with an appropriate institution for M.A./M.Sc. degree in Mathematics. The scholarships will be paid through the institution which they join. The scholarships are sanctioned for one year at a time and are renewable at the end of the year, subject to satisfactory progress. Selection will be made on the basis of a written test and interview to assess the aptitude of the applicants. Applications in duplicate along with a recent passport size photograph should be made in the proforma enclosed alongwith this advertisement and sent to the address given below. The applicants should arrange for letters of recommendation from three teachers to be sent directly to the address appearing below, with the same markings. A self addressed post card/stamped envelope should accompany the application for acknowledgement of receipt. Candidates called for written test/interview will be paid railway fares limited to sleeper class (second class) and a sum of Rs 50/- as halting allowance for the day of test/interview. In case of a bus journey the entitlement towards travel claim will be limited to the fare charged by public buses. REFRESHER
COURSE IN at Drosophila Stock Center, Department of Zoology, University of Mysore, Mysore 570006 10-22, September, 2001 An intensive course in Genetics and Evolution will be held for college and university teachers. The course coordinators are Prof. H A Ranganath (Mysore) and Prof. R Gadagkar (Bangalore). The course will have lectures on Mendelian genetics, Population genetics, Quantitative genetics, Genes and development, Molecular genetics, Genomics, Evolutionary theory, Speciation, Molecular evolution, Phylogenetic reconstruction and related areas. Besides lectures, intensive practicals will cover genetic experiments with Drosophila _ Drosophila as a model system, mutant phenotypes, mono and dihybrid crosses, construction of linkage maps, interaction of genes, population genetic experiments, mitotic and polytene chromosomes, inversion polymorphism, electrophoresis, paper chromatography, mating behaviour, etc. Selected participants will be provided local hospitality and round trip train fare (I Class or II AC) by the nearest route.
