Abstract.
Chandrasekhar’s most important contribution to stellar dynamics
was the concept of
dynamical
friction. I briefly review that work, then discuss some implications of
Chandrasekhar’s
theory
of gravitational encounters for motion in galactic nuclei.
Keywords. Celestial mechanics; relativity and gravitation.
