Stellar dynamics and black holes

Abstract. Chandrasekhar’s most important contribution to stellar dynamics was the concept of

dynamical friction. I briefly review that work, then discuss some implications of Chandrasekhar’s

theory of gravitational encounters for motion in galactic nuclei.
