Vertical profiles of aerosol extinction coefficient, which is a measure of the attenuation of the radiation, due to both scattering and absorption and proportional to the amount of aerosol present at that altitude. Note that after explosive volcanic eruptions, the aerosol amount in the stratosphere increases by more than an order of magnitude and the effect lasts for about three years.
