This conference was organized during December 20–24, 2004 by the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Professor K B Sinha, a distinguished mathematician, was felicitated at the conference on his sixtieth birthday. In view of the high level of some of the talks, it was decided to bring out a special issue on "Operator Theory, Quantum Probability and Non-commutative Geometry" in the Proceedings – Mathematical Sciences.

A national level conference on Functional Analysis and its Applications  was organized during 13--15 June 2001 by the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Professor A K Roy, a distinguished Functional Analyst, was felicitated at the conference on his sixty second birthday. In view of the high level of some of the talks, it was decided to bring out a special issue on Functional Analysis in the Proceedings -- Mathematical Sciences. Each of the articles in this issue went through the usual refereeing process of the journal.

The spectral theory of Schrodinger operators is a highly developed field and has given rise to many new mathematical techniques. Some of these find applications in the scattering theory in quantum mechanics. The scattering theory involves the study of the wave operators and the scattering matrices associated with pairs of self-adjoint operators. The workshop "Spectral and Inverse Spectral Theory" was organized by the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, during August 24–30, 1993, at the Kodaikanal Observatory of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. This volume is a result of that effort.

                                                                                                            304 pages

Professor K G Ramanathan was small of build but had a big influence on the post-independence Indian mathematical scene. Despite the legacy of the legendary Srinivasa Ramanujan and several other mathematicians of high standing early in this century, pursuit of mathematics had remained rather weak in Indian till the fifties. He was one of the few people responsible for the fortification which has put India firmly back on the international mathematical map. He not only was himself a front-ranking mathematician of international reputation, but also contributed a great deal to the emergence of a strong mathematical base at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research as also to the overall development of research and teaching of mathematics in India and, to an extent, even beyond our shores.
He was well recognized for his achievements in Number Theory, especially the analytic and arithmetic theory of quadratic forms over division algebras with involution.

The life and work of Srinivasa Ramanujan are of unique significance to all enthusiasts of mathematics, professionals and amateurs alike. It is a matter of pride for us in India, that despite the unfortunate brevity of his life and lack of formal training his work continues, even after seven odd decades, to generate new and vital mathematics and more and more of it is being applied outside mathematics. The story of the towering genius is, on the other hand, an invaluable reminder to us to explore with confidence our potentialities as also to keep up a dynamic interaction with the global mainstream.
