During the past sixty years, a large amount of work has been devoted to producing elements that do not occur in nature; this is the subject matter of artificial nucleosynthesis. In fact, the story goes back to the thirties when Enrico Fermi produced lead by b -decay, after bombarding thallium with neutrons. Elements up to atomic number 94 occur naturally; elements of atomic number larger than 94 are produced either in nuclear reactors or by using accelerators.
